2026 Student Civic Field Trip
Abbotsford School District elementary and middle school students recently stepped beyond the classroom to learn more about the local services, community spaces and public institutions that support the city they call home.
As part of the civic field trip experience, students visited several community locations, including the Abbotsford School District School Board Office, Abbotsford Police Department, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Services, Abbotsford City Hall, Fraser Valley Regional Library, and The Reach Gallery Museum.
At the School Board Office, students learned about diverse classroom spaces before working in small groups to design their ideal classroom environment. The activity invited students to share their voices and think creatively about what helps them feel comfortable, engaged and ready to learn.
Their ideas included soft seating and couches for reading, plants and natural light, adjustable lighting, a classroom pet, exercise equipment such as stationary bikes and yoga mats, and different learning zones to support a variety of activities and learning styles.
The activity highlighted the value of listening to students as active contributors to their learning environments. By visiting local organizations and sharing their own ideas, students were able to see themselves as active participants in Abbotsford’s shared future.
The Abbotsford School District extends its appreciation to the community partners, staff and contributors to our community who helped make this learning experience possible.
