Tobacco Use on School District Property

Background


Smoking presents a significant health and safety hazard. Staff must be proactive in the education about and enforcement of BC Legislation Bill 10 – Tobacco Sales Amendment Act, as well as any City of Abbotsford Smoking Regulation Bylaw related to tobacco use.

Procedures


Smoking and the use of all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, is not permitted on school district property at any time.

1. Students

1.1 Students under the age of 19, with tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vapes, on school district property shall be subject to discipline under the School Code of Conduct in accordance with AP 333 – Student Suspensions.

2. Employees

2.1 Employees are permitted to have tobacco products in their possession, but the use of all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vapes, is prohibited on school district property.

3. Public

3.1 Anyone found by school district staff using tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vapes, on school district property will be asked to immediately discontinue the use and/or leave the school district property.

4. Other

4.1 Specialized ceremonies involving tobacco may be utilized on school district premises only with the permission of the superintendent of schools.
